Through the collaborative efforts of both UCI Facilities Management and Housing, working with Goodwill, we were able to divert 82 tons from the landfill during UCI's 2014 Move-Out Event.
Last June as students packed up their belongings and cleaned out their beloved rooms, they were able to donate their unused items into bins conveniently provided in all seven housing locations in the buildings common area. The bins were placed during the tenth and finals weeks to allow even more time for students to donate items such as: unused school supplies, books and clothing.
In addition, six teams of participants were temporarily employed tp help collect the many donations from UCI, which contributed to Goodwill's mission of helping people find jobs. This clearly demonstrates how a green lifestyle leads to green jobs and the act of donation is truly a gift that keeps on giving.
We are already planning the 2015 Move-Out Event, where we can continue to spread kindness to those who need it most.
